About

One of the world’s most revered chamber orchestras, The Academy of St Martin in the Fields was joined by Joshua Bell –one of the finest violinists of his generation, for two programmes, exclusive to Brisbane.

Founded in 1958 by Sir Neville Marriner, The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, was formed from a group of leading London musicians working without a conductor. The Academy is now firmly established as one of the great chamber orchestras, known for its superlative performances, award-winning recordings and collaborations with some of the world’s most exciting soloists.

For more than two decades, Joshua Bell has enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and tone of rare beauty. Known for his breadth and daring choices of repertoire, Bell has created a richly varied catalogue of over 30 recordings. Bell holds a Gramophone Award, a Grammy® Award, the prestigious Mercury Music Prize and the 2008 Academy of Achievement Award for exceptional accomplishment in the arts.

Reviews

Bell turns the clock back to an older, more romantic era. He sings with his violin in a rounded, golden tone. Behind him is the plump presence of 18 string players from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, playing as if the “authentic” movement had never happened. The Academy members prove more than polished antiques. Their plucked strings are an ear-tingling joy; and though they’re heavy in sound, they can move nimbly when asked.” The Times
